Introduction
Air superiority is the foundation of modern military operations. Without it, ground forces cannot move, ships cannot sail safely, and every other instrument of national power is constrained. Fighter jets are the tools that establish and defend air superiority. The number of fighters a country fields — and more importantly, their generation and support infrastructure — determines its ability to contest the sky.
Why This Ranking Matters
A fourth-generation fighter with modern radar, weapons, and trained pilots can defeat multiple older aircraft. A fifth-generation stealth fighter can defeat multiple fourth-generation planes. This is why the United States, with fewer than 2,000 fighters, maintains undisputed air superiority wherever it chooses to operate. Raw counts matter, but the gap between a frontline F-35 and a museum-piece MiG is measured in orders of magnitude.
