Economic Power Rankings: GDP by Country 2026

Complete 2026 ranking of 63 nations by gdp (nominal). Data sourced from SIPRI, IISS Military Balance, and Global Firepower Index.

Introduction

Everything begins with economic size. A country cannot sustain a large military without a large economy. It cannot fund research and development, maintain industrial base, or absorb the costs of a long war. The correlation between GDP and military capability is not perfect — small countries can field excellent armed forces through focused spending, and large economies can underinvest in defense — but over time, economic weight and military weight converge.

Why This Ranking Matters

The United States and China together account for roughly 40% of global GDP. That concentration of economic power explains why their militaries are the only two that compete in every domain at global scale. The European Union, taken as a single unit, would rank near the top of this list, but its fragmented defense spending and weak integration mean it punches well below its economic weight. Rising economies like India and Indonesia are projected to reshape the rankings over the next decade.
