Countries with Aircraft Carriers 2026

Complete 2026 ranking of 63 nations by aircraft carriers. Data sourced from SIPRI, IISS Military Balance, and Global Firepower Index.

Introduction

Aircraft carriers are the most expensive, most complex, and most prestigious ships in any navy. They are floating airbases that let a country project fighter aircraft thousands of kilometers from home. Operating even one carrier requires an enormous supporting infrastructure — destroyers, submarines, replenishment ships, and tens of thousands of trained sailors. Only a handful of countries can afford and sustain them.

Why This Ranking Matters

The United States operates more aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined, and the gap in quality is even larger than the gap in numbers. A US nuclear-powered supercarrier can project more air power than most national air forces. Other carriers — Chinese, Indian, British, French, Italian, Russian — are smaller, less capable, or older, but still signal global ambitions. Countries without carriers must rely on land bases, allies, or asymmetric tools to project power overseas.
